Ten Years In, We're Still Discovering

From the roots that gave us Balay Kreative to a new chapter of Filipino creativity, community, and possibility.

Before There Was Balay Kreative, There Was UNDISCOVERED.

Ten years ago, UNDISCOVERED began creating space for Filipino artists, entrepreneurs, and culture to be seen and celebrated in San Francisco.

Out of that success, Balay Kreative was born, carrying that creative spirit forward and building more sustained opportunities for Filipino artists to grow, connect, and tell their stories.

Now, ten years later, both Balay Kreative and UNDISCOVERED find themselves at pivotal turning points.

As Balay Kreative enters a period of rebuilding, we've been listening closely to artists, learning about their needs, and reimagining how we can better support their creative journeys.

And as UNDISCOVERED celebrates its tenth anniversary, we're doing the same.

We're asking ourselves: How do we evolve? How do we stay fresh and true to our community? And what should the next ten years look like?

Our answer begins with listening—and a willingness to try something new.

Ten Years. Three Experiences. One Community.

Instead of one big anniversary celebration, UNDISCOVERED is experimenting with a three-part series.

We began with an intimate Entrepreneur Summit, bringing together Filipino business owners to share their experiences, challenges, and aspirations.

Much like Balay Kreative's recent conversations with artists, it was an opportunity to listen, learn, and imagine what comes next.

Now, we're taking that same spirit somewhere new.

A New Neighborhood. A Historic Space. The Same Creative Spirit.

On October 24, UNDISCOVERED is moving south from its familiar home on Mission Street to Ritch Street Alley, hosted by Victory Hall and Mestiza.

We're stepping into a space with a remarkable history of its own.

The building at 330 Ritch once housed a gay bathhouse, part of San Francisco's LGBTQ+ social and nightlife culture.

Later, it became the legendary 330 Ritch nightclub, known for its hip-hop nights, indie music, and beloved Popscene parties.

Through its many transformations, this space has brought people together through music, culture, and connection.

On October 24, we get to add another chapter.

Join us for the Golden Hour Night Market, a celebration of Filipino American food, music, entrepreneurship, and creativity in a place with a long history of gathering and expression.

Come discover new businesses, reconnect with familiar faces, and help us celebrate the community that made the past ten years possible.

Honoring the People Who Helped Build This Movement

This tenth anniversary also marks a significant transition for one of the people who helped bring this creative movement to life.

After this year, Gina Rosales, co-founder of Balay Kreative and co-founder and producer of UNDISCOVERED, will be stepping down from her role with UNDISCOVERED.

Gina has been instrumental in shaping the creative vision and spirit that made UNDISCOVERED what it is today.

Her contributions helped create a platform that not only celebrates Filipino creativity but also inspired new initiatives, relationships, and opportunities—including the birth of Balay Kreative.

We're deeply grateful for the care, imagination, and dedication she has brought to this movement.

Her contributions will remain part of its story as new people carry the work forward.

And What About the Balay Kreative Studio?

We know many of you have been wondering when we'll have a physical studio home again.

We've been asking ourselves that question, too.

Over the past year, we've toured many promising spaces and explored different paths toward making a new studio possible.

We even explored purchasing a property in partnership with other community organizations.

Late this summer, we were in serious conversations with IKEA about a potential partnership that would have brought artist studios to the second floor of its food hall.

We were excited by what that could mean for our artists and for downtown San Francisco.

Unfortunately, none of those opportunities came together.

We want to be honest about where things stand.

After UNDISCOVERED and the MAHAL mural unveiling, we'll regroup and revisit our options.

But we're also facing an uphill challenge.

San Francisco's AI technology boom is intensifying competition for desirable commercial and office spaces, and the prices we're encountering are climbing sharply.

Finding an accessible, sustainable home for artists may be harder now than when we began this search.

Still, the need for creative space hasn't disappeared.

Neither has our commitment.

We'll keep listening to artists and exploring what a new home for Balay Kreative could look like, even if the path takes longer than we hoped.

Here's to the Next Chapter.

Our tenth-anniversary series concludes on November 13 with the unveiling of the MAHAL murals, another celebration of the stories and artists who connect us.

But first, come join us October 24 for the Golden Hour Night Market on Ritch Street.

As we honor the people and places that brought us here, we're also making room for what comes next.

Because the next chapter of UNDISCOVERED, just like the next chapter of Balay Kreative, begins with all of us.

With creativity and care,
The Balay Kreative Team
