In 2016, SOMA Pilipinas was officially recognized by the City of San Francisco as SF’s Filipino Cultural Heritage District, under the leadership of the Filipino-American Development Foundation. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, more than 5,000 Filipino-Americans call this area their home. The Filipino population in SoMa has been cut in half over the last 10 years, and the formation of the Cultural District is a proactive initiative effort to protect our communities, preserve our culture, heritage and cultural assets. SoMa is a place made possible because of our community's struggle and resilience to make a home here along with the leadership of women, workers, artists, youth, seniors and immigrant families. SOMA Pilipinas embraces the spirit of bayanihan: the collective determination to honor and make history, build community and progress forward.

Philippine American Writers and Artists, Inc. (PAWA) is an SF Bay Area based Filipino American literary and arts org.

Since 2009, we have held our monthly literary and performance series in collaboration with Arkipelago Books, the Bayanihan Center, the Filipino American Center at the SF Public Library, the Manilatown Heritage Foundation, Kundiman, Achiote Press, Poets & Writers, Oakland Asian Cultural Center, Eth-Noh-Tec, Eastwind Books of Berkeley, Kearny Street Workshop, and Bird & Beckett Books. We are invested in creating venues for Filipino American artists, and have worked to grow our community across ethnic and aesthetic boundaries. We believe it is important to provide access, and opportunity, which we have also done through fiscal sponsorship of community artists.

Originally opened in 1989, Bindlestiff Studio became the only permanent, community-based performing arts venue in the nation dedicated to showcasing emerging Filipino American and Pilipino artists. Bindlestiff Studio provides the often under-served Filipino American community access to diverse offerings in theatrical productions, music and film festivals, workshops in directing, production, acting, stand-up comedy, and writing, as well as a children and youth theater program.

Founded in 1985, Kulintang Arts, Inc., now known popularly as Kularts, is the premier presenter of contemporary and tribal Pilipino arts in the United States. Through our three decades of service, Kularts has grown into a leading elder arts organization, uniting generations of artists and community activists in a common effort to build a collective space and sense of belonging within our city, specifically the SOMA Pilipinas: Filipino Cultural Heritage District. Kularts creates work that makes visible the contributions of Pilipino Americans and creates room for cultural continuity and knowledge.
