How to Create a Winning Application for the Kreative Growth Program

Applying for the Kreative Growth program is an exciting opportunity to advance your creative practice! Whether you're an artist, designer, or creative entrepreneur, this guide will help you craft a compelling application that stands out. Gain insight about our application process from our Balay Kreative Team.

When reviewing applications, what are you looking for? What kind of applications tend to capture your attention?

Nicole: Projects with Passion! It doesn't matter what your background is or your level of experience; what impresses the judges most are projects with a clear vision, a powerful and passionate description, and a well-crafted moodboard or pitch deck that showcases your vision with clarity.

Judges are drawn to applications that demonstrate a strong sense of purpose and direction. Passion and enthusiasm in the description are also critical, as they convey the applicant's dedication and commitment to their project.

Additionally, a well-constructed moodboard or pitch deck that visually and effectively communicates the project's concept is highly valuable. This not only showcases the applicant's creativity and attention to detail but also helps me understand their vision more vividly.

In summary, applications that stand out typically have a clear vision, passionate descriptions, and a visually appealing presentation that brings the project to life.

Iggy: The more detail the better! If there is an opportunity to further elaborate on the small technical details of your project, definitely take advantage of that.

What creative projects would you like to see come to the SOMA Pilipinas district?

Nicole: Film and Media Projects! I’m a filmmaker myself, so I love supporting independent filmmakers and media creators who focus on Filipino & BIPOC stories and perspectives, providing a platform for underrepresented voices in the arts.

I believe this world needs more JOY! That's why I initiated the Comedy track this year. I'm thrilled to see who will apply and what projects will emerge from this year’s Kreative Growth Comedy Artist program.

Iggy: I’d like to see more large scale murals!

What resources do you recommend interested artists in checking out?

Nicole: We provide so many resources for any artist to create a successful application.  I definitely recommend folx check out our resources section to look at past examples of mood boards, application questions and book a one on one session with myself or Desi. Also, utilize software like Google Slides, Canva or Powerpoint to create a well crafted pitch deck to accompany your application.

Iggy: I recommend visiting our resources section on the Kreative Growth web page. This has centralized information on booking a 1 on 1, info session dates, and an opportunity to submit your questions in a FAQ form.

If you can share one last tip for artists interested in applying, what would it be?

Nicole:  One last tip for artists interested in applying for the Kreative Growth Program: Be authentic and let your passion shine through. Showcase your unique perspective and voice in your application, and don’t be afraid to take risks and push creative boundaries. Authenticity and genuine enthusiasm can make your project stand out and resonate with the judges.

AND when submitting work samples, don’t just send a link to your Instagram account or a Google folder with 35+ links! Make your work sample clear and concise!  Our panel of 10 judges are going through 100 applications. They won’t have time to watch an hour of links or scroll through your instagram account.  Direct them to the top 5 work samples you have.

Iggy: If you are submitting a link to your portfolio or work samples, make sure the permissions are on public and view only.

Applying for the Kreative Growth program is a significant step in your creative journey. Take the time to carefully craft each component of your application, ask our team questions, come to our information sessions, and put your best foot forward. Good luck!
