Kreative Growth

2022

Balay Kreative wants to accelerate the growth of Filipinx artistic expression in SOMA Pilipinas — because Filipinx creatives have always been here, and it’s time to show their stories to the world.

A SAMPLE OF OUR 2020 KREATIVE GROWTH RECIPIENTS

Art is an expression of our experiences, and can therefore manifest through many art forms. Aware of the dynamic range of our people, Balay Kreative has developed an unprecedented program that will uplift and foster their diverse creative voices, with the goal of sparking a renaissance of Filipinx creativity and hustle in SOMA Pilipinas.

This year, we are issuing (7) $3,000 - $6,000 grants to Filipinx artists in the Bay Area to create and present new works of art & culture in the SOMA Pilipinas Filipino Cultural District of San Francisco. Recipients of the Balay Kreative Growth will also receive free artist studio space, free tuition in our Kreative Growth Masterclass series, and 1:1 mentoring with industry professionals in their field of practice.

Program Tracks

The Balay Kreative Growth Program is organized around (4) art form categories, which serve as our Program Tracks for recipients to center their application, project, and program experience around.

This year, 1-2 winners will be chosen from each track, for a total of 7 grantees.

1) Visual Arts

Visual Arts practices include, but are not limited to, painting, drawing, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking, design, crafts, photography, multimedia production, immersive experience, and fashion/textiles. Our key classification for “visual art” is that it must be something that is physical and tangible (therefore, Film/Video would instead fall under our “Content Creation” track).

Recipients will be given the opportunity to showcase their works through a gallery at CAST in October or December by the end of 2022 at no cost.

Awardees in this track will receive $3000 in grants.

2) Music

Musical Arts practices can be expressed through modes such as an album, EP, or soundscape. Whether it's a rap song or an instrumental piece, the main emphasis for this track is that the work is in the form of song or musical composition.

Recipients will present their work at Kapwa Gardens at no cost or in a venue in SOMA Pilipinas.

Awardees in this track will receive $3000 in grants.

3) Performing Arts

Performing Arts practices include, but are not limited to, dance/choreography, theater, screenplay/script reading, puppetry, circus acts, and poetry/spoken word performance. Our key classification for “performing arts” is that the practice involves using facial expressions, voice, and/or body language to communicate an idea/story to an audience.

Recipients will present their work at Kapwa Gardens at no cost or in a venue in SOMA Pilipinas.

Awardee in this track will receive A $6000 in grant.

4) Workshops / Content Creation

Workshops focus on teaching something that is a Filipino cultural practice (ex: cooking demonstrations, art-making classes, dance training). Grantee workshops can occur online or in-person at Balay Kreative.

Content Creation entails digital media practices such as, short and long form films/videos, multimedia production, podcasts, or a social media series. Content creation can also be made at Balay Kreative, Kapwa Gardens or any venue in SOMA Pilipinas.

Awardees in this track will receive $3000 in grants.
