FAQs / Open Call - 2026 Kreative Growth: MAHAL
KREATIVE GROWTH 2026 — MAHAL | FAQs
Q: What is the Kreative Growth Program?
A: Kreative Growth is Balay Kreative's open call for Bay Area visual artists. Two awardees each receive $4,000 and a spot in a duo exhibition in June 2026.
Q: What is the theme this year?
A: The theme is Mahal — a Tagalog word meaning both "beloved" and "valuable." Artists are invited to explore it as a creative expression, a cultural practice, and a vision for how we care for each other and our city.
**Please see our video on the community's thoughts on the theme of MAHAL
Q: Who can apply?
A: Visual artists based in the SF Bay Area working in traditional/fine arts (painting, drawing, printmaking), contemporary/digital (photography, illustration, animation, 3D), or mixed media (collage, textiles, calligraphy).
Q: Can I use AI in my work?
A: AI can be used for ideation and developing concepts, but all finished artwork must be made by the artist.
***Fully AI-generated work will not be accepted.
Q: Is there an application fee?
A: No — it's completely free to apply.
Q: What can the $4,000 artist award be used for?
A: The artist award can be used for supplies, materials, rent, administrative, and general operation expenses related to the creation of your artwork.
Q: How do I apply?
A: Fill out the application at the link in our bio, or go to: balaykreative.org/2026-kreative-growth-program.
Deadline: March 27, 2026.
Q: How are applicants selected?
A: A panel of artists and community stakeholders reviews all submissions. Two finalists are selected for the June 2026 group exhibition.
Q: When and where is the exhibition?
A: June 2026 — location TBD | Follow @balaykreative for updates.
Q: How many pieces am I expected to submit or create for this show?
A: It depends on the size of your work, but we will provide the dimensions of the available wall hanging space that will be divided equally for the 2 chosen artists. All work must be able to hang from a cable system affixed to the brick walls. Please note that because of the limitations of the space, only 2D hangable art will be accepted.
Q: When will the public be able to view my artwork after the initial opening event?
A: We plan to have the opening day event in late May, with a public showing during the first 2 weeks of June. The days and hours of gallery availability will be based on the artists’ availability to be present (or have a trusted personnel) at the gallery space. The specifics can be discussed once the 2 final artists are chosen.
Q: Who do I contact with questions?
