"Third Culture Songs" by The Sampaguitas

  • CAST Building 447 Minna Street San Francisco, CA, 94103 United States (map)

Third CULTURE SONGS

The Sampaguitas sing Filipino folk songs in three-part harmony. Together, Jenevieve Francisco, Cristina Ibarra and Aireene Espiritu explore their third culture identities through original music and songs from their roots. The Sampaguita is the national flower of The Philippines and only fitting to describe the sweet sounds coming from their melded vocal textures, tones, and tight harmonies.

This special pre-Valentine's Day concert will feature traditional songs, inspired originals, and a preview of new music recorded at Women's Audio Mission, made possible by the Balay Kreative Growth grant.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, The Sampaguitas sing Filipino folk songs and inspired originals in three-part harmony. Drawing influences from folk, blues, doo-wop girl groups, and the Filipinx-American diaspora, The Sampaguitas (Jenevieve Francisco, Cristina Ibarra, and Aireene Espiritu) share music from our roots and explore what it means to be in a “third culture” between worlds.

The Sampaguitas met in San Francisco and immediately connected over their shared Filipina ancestry and love of music. Their collaboration evolved organically, each bringing musical strengths into the fold. Using Filipino folk songs as a way to explore their cultural roots, singing together unlocked a deep connection, not only to each other, but to audiences as well. Over the past two years, the focus has been on learning traditional Filipino folk songs and classics, but more recently, it has evolved into experimenting with original songwriting and collaborating on lyrics and melodies that tell the story of “third culture” experiences.
