Demystifying the grant application process featuring Melody Hernandez (Nonprofit Grant Consultant), Margo Melcon (Zellerbach Family Foundation) and Jonell Molina, Ed.D. (SF Arts Commission). This workshop is designed to provide artists with an overview of the grant application process and offer tips for crafting successful grant proposals.
During this workshop, our panel of experienced grant writers and reviewers will cover the following topics:
Understanding the grant landscape: We will discuss the different types of grants available to artists, including government grants, private foundation grants, and individual donor grants.
Crafting a compelling grant proposal: Our panelists will provide tips for writing a successful grant proposal, including how to effectively communicate your artistic vision, how to present your experience and qualifications, and how to create a realistic budget.
Q&A session: We will reserve time at the end of the workshop for questions from the audience. Our panelists will be available to answer any questions you have about the grant application process and offer personalized advice on specific grant questions.
By the end of this workshop, participants will have a solid understanding of the grant application process and be equipped with the tools and knowledge necessary to craft successful grant proposals. Melody is a Nonprofit Grant Consultant working primarily with Bay Area organizations that work from within the community served. She has raised over $20 million dollars on behalf of her clients, the bulk of which have been for small to mid-sized organizations working on the front lines of equity and social justice including Kultivate Labs, Kearny Street Workshop, the Chinese Culture Center, Booker T. Washington, East Oakland Youth Development Center, Chinese Cultural Center, The Contemporary Jewish Museum, Theatre Bay Area, BiSHoP, City EMT, and Good Samaritan Family Resource Center. She also leads workshops and trainings teaching artists and community leaders about fund development and is the President of the local chapter of the Grant Professionals Association.

Margot Melcon (she/her) joined the Zellerbach Family Foundation in 2015 and manages the arts and culture grantmaking portfolio - including the Community Arts program - where she works to create an equitable, responsive, and accessible relationship in community with Bay Area artists. Prior to joining the foundation, she worked with nonprofit arts organizations for 20 years as a dramaturg, producer, and arts administrator. She is also a playwright of the Christmas at Pemberley trilogy, co-written with Lauren Gunderson. She lives in San Francisco with her family.

Jonell Molina brings 20+ years of quality, depth, and breadth as a committed youth developer and educational leader navigating institutional terrains and systems in supporting youth, families, and communities in San Francisco. Jonell is an experienced Ethnic Studies teacher as an alumni of the Pin@y Educational Partnerships (PEP) where his critical pedagogical praxis and community responsiveness empowers narrative experiences of BIPOC youth & leaders in the exploration of their culture, language, and identity. Jonell, frequently collaborates with community stakeholders as a key thought partner on activities, events, and projects. Jonell graduated with his Doctorate in Educational Leadership, Ed.D (20’) from SF State. His dissertation research entitled, “Nurturing Neighborhood Spirit: Culturally Responsive Mentorship in Community-Based Educational Spaces” examines the influence and impact of providing quality guidance, support, and access to social and cultural resources in the community.
